Here, I will attempt to answer the most common questions I receive about my editing services. If your question is not answered here, please do not hesitate to email me. I will be more than happy to help :)
Who is this service for?
Stellar Edits is designed to meet the editing needs of various creative types across the web—writers, podcasters, app developers, designers, photographers, videographers, musicians, and more.
All these professions require writing in some form or another:
- Blog posts and pages
- Podcast show notes
- Video descriptions
- App descriptions/release notes
- Marketing copy
- Store/product pages
As the inimitable Sean McCabe would say, “It all starts with writing.” Ensuring the quality of that writing is my job.
Do you edit books?
Depends. Editing books is not a primary focus of mine, but I'm not totally averse to the idea, provided the project is right for my skills. I should state up front that Stellar Edits is more of a side gig for me than a full-time job. I'm on the road with my wife and son a lot, so I can only give my full focus to projects of appropriate length and subject matter.
A novel, fictional work, or anything else involving a storyline? Probably not.
An ebook or guide on a given topic, especially a nerdy one? Maybe! Get in touch to see if we can work together.
What's with the "Stellar Edits" name?
Besides being a cool word, I chose the name "stellar" for three reasons:
- It indicates excellence, something I strive for with every edit.
- It also means "of or relating to stars." As a lifelong fan of astronomy and science fiction, this appeals to me.
- It's a great Incubus song.
Which style guide do you adhere to?
Short answer: I don't.
Longer answer: In my years of writing experience, I've read several style guides and thought long and hard about the various "rules" of written English. I haven't 100% agreed with any one guide, so over time I've merely settled on guidelines I'm comfortable with.
For example, I do use Oxford commas, I don't leave spaces around em dashes (except in certain cases), and whether or not I include a period within quotes depends on the situation.
You may or may not agree with my stylistic choices, but at least know they come from a place of thoughtful consideration.
How does the payment process work?
Card payments are taken online via Square. If your local coffee shop has ever swiped your card with a smartphone or tablet, there's a good chance they were using a little white Square Reader. If you've seen this in action, you already know how simple and secure Square's payment process is.
Note: The checkout process requires a "shipping address" for payment. My services are entirely digital and nothing will actually be shipped to you in the mail. This was simply something I had to enable within Square to sell my editing services online. It's a little bit of extra work up front, but once you've entered your information, it can be saved for future transactions (just make sure the box labeled "Make this my default shipping address" is checked).
What file formats do you work in?
I work best with plain-text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files. I work primarily from an iPad and tend to travel around with this setup, so it behooves me to keep things simple. If you prefer a different file type, let me know and I'll see if I can work with it.
